Shooting Range to Re-Open

The Board of Directors and the BVSA staff have done much research in the past six months regarding the gun range including consulting with agencies familiar with gun safety and fire prevention, as well as seeking community feedback.

Based on this information, the Board of Directors has directed staff to re-open the Range beginning Sunday, January 15. For the first month or so, we will be open on Saturdays and will modify the schedule based on participation and Ranger schedules.

The Range will open under the following parameters:

·        The Range will be open based on information from the Fire Department.  It will close or be unavailable on “red flag days” or when high winds and dry conditions are expected. This means that the range may seasonally close or be sporadic in the summer and/or fall.

·        The Range will be staffed by 2 Rangers with a maximum of up to 10 members/guests at a time. Appointments must be made with 24-48 hour notice at the Whiting Center for 2 hour blocks (no same day reservations will be available).

·        Shooting is limited to shotgun/handgun only. No rifles.

·        All members and guests who plan to use the Range will need to register on the Whiting Center’s online portal, RecDesk - Whiting Center staff will verify membership status and guest sponsorship. Once approved, the member and/or guest will complete liability forms, a safety test, and initial agreement to the updated Standard Operating Procedures that have been approved for use of the range through RecDesk. Upon completion, the member will be able to contact the Whiting Center by phone or in person to schedule their appointment time and pay the guest fee for any guest that will be accompanying them (and has also completed the above).

The Whiting Center staff will have the RecDesk portal ready with the necessary forms and test early next week.  We highly encourage all members & their guests who plan to use the Range to register online at so that their membership can be verified and ready to go once the Range program is available on RecDesk next week. The Whiting Center staff is happy to walk members through who may not be comfortable with technology by phone at 661-821-6641 or will assist in registering them in person at the Whiting Center front desk.

Thank you for your patience as we have worked to determine best practices. We are excited to re-open this amenity for the enjoyment of our members while also exercising the caution necessary to keep our community safe.
